about

Jordie Lane’s Lovers Ride EP (originally released in 2006) was recorded in his back shed in Melbourne, Australia on the now famously quoted sum of $132.50. How is that possible? The only cash handed over was for the hire of a few mics and a case of beer.

Originally planned as a session of demos, Lovers Ride quickly found itself becoming much more than that. Something of a concept record. Jordie teamed up with long time school pal Josh Iacono to co-produce, with old family friend Al Mullins in the engineering seat. They enlisted a star line-up of local muso’s to lend there time for a few beers, and called upon local music stores and audio hiring friends to do cheap deals on gear.

Bringing together country rock based stylings with the Hammond organ of Billy Murray and telecaster twang care of Lane himself sees the two opening songs ‘Old Quarter Town’ and ‘Bottle Of Her Love (part 1)’ open the record with conviction. A classic R&B/soul feel on ‘Take Me Out Of This World’ with a horn section arranged by Jordie’s father John, saw Jordie conducting the players with a single chop stick which he accidentally snapped in half over the music stand during the take (as he got right into the feeling of the song). It also sees a stunning vocal appearance from Liz Stringer.

But it’s the stripped back acoustic guitar and vocal track: ‘Sweet Somebody’ (the only song recorded elsewhere, in a inner city office block store room) which shows Jordie’s unmistakable fine craft for poetic writing and emotive delivery, evoking a vocal tone similar to that of the late ‘American Recordings’ of Johnny Cash. The song was covered by Jeff Lang on his Blessed South Tour CD in 2008 and received honorable mention in the International Songwriting Competition 2007.
